What Sentin watches

What Sentin watches

In short: new trademark filings at the EU register, every morning, compared with the marks you add. Here is the longer answer.

Where it looks

The EUIPO register, which covers the whole European Union with one filing.

You can also add Singapore (IPOS) and Canada (CIPO) when you add a mark. Those two registers are included during your 30 days and on the paid plan.

When it looks

Every morning at 07:00, Amsterdam time. When a new filing looks close to your mark, you get an email. In a quiet week you get one short all-clear email, so you know the watch is still running.

What it catches

Both are checked in the classes that matter to you.

Which classes matter

A class is the group of goods or services a trademark is filed for. A name that is close to yours matters most when it is filed in your own field, or in a field next to it.

Alerts come in three kinds. URGENT is close to your mark in your own field. REVIEW is worth a look, perhaps in a neighbouring field. CLEAR is checked and logged, with nothing to act on.

A close name filed in a class that has nothing to do with yours is logged, not alerted. It stays in your dashboard if you want to look, and your inbox stays for what matters.

What you can do: look at the filing on the EUIPO register. If it matters to you, file an opposition before the deadline. The official fee is €320; most owners use a trademark attorney.

Made-up marks. Real alerts link straight to the filing.

What Sentin does not do

What you do next

Open the filing on the register and decide whether it matters to you. In the EU you have three months from publication to object. The period is set by Article 46 of the EU Trade Mark Regulation and cannot be extended.

To oppose, you file with the EUIPO. The official fee is €320. If you are unsure, talk to a trademark attorney before the deadline; that costs far less than a dispute later. The deadline calculator works out the last day for any published EU mark.
