How to monitor your EU trademark for free

Trademark monitoring services range from a few euros a month to hundreds. The expensive ones are built for legal teams managing large portfolios. If you have one or two trademarks, most of that is more than you need.

Here is what your actual options are, from free to paid.

Check the EUIPO bulletin manually

EUIPO publishes all new trademark applications in the EU Trade Marks Bulletin. You can search it at euipo.europa.eu. Set aside time each week to search for names similar to yours. This is free and works, but it requires discipline and knowing what to look for. Most people do it once and then stop.

Set up a Google Alert

A Google Alert for your trademark name will catch press mentions and some legal database entries, but it will not catch EUIPO filings directly. It is a reasonable supplement but not a substitute for watching the register.

Use a free monitoring tier

Some trademark monitoring tools offer a free plan. Sentin is one of them. You can add one trademark, and Sentin checks EUIPO daily and emails you if a new filing looks similar. It compares names phonetically and visually, and it flags filings in the same or related classes. For most small brand owners with one trademark, that covers the essential risk.

When to pay for more

If you have a logo as well as a word mark, or if you have multiple trademarks across different classes, a free plan may not be enough. Logo monitoring requires comparing image filings, which is more computationally intensive. Paid plans typically add this and cover more trademarks.

The main question is: what is your trademark worth to you? If you have invested time and money building a brand under that name, the cost of missing an opposition window is far higher than the cost of any monitoring tool.

Sentin monitors EUIPO daily for new filings similar to your trademark. Free plan covers one trademark with no time limit.
